Yacht management
Yacht management is the professional running of a yacht on the owner's behalf. It covers technical maintenance, regulatory compliance, crew, safety, insurance, accounts and, for charter yachts, the charter operation.
What does a yacht manager do?
A yacht manager keeps the vessel legal, safe, maintained and accounted for. That means tracking certificates and surveys, planning maintenance and refits, handling crew and payroll, arranging insurance, paying suppliers, and reporting costs to the owner. A management company does this for several yachts at once; on a smaller vessel the captain often carries the same duties alone.
Who manages a yacht?
There are two common arrangements. A yacht management company takes on the running of a vessel, or a fleet of them, under a management agreement and reports to each owner. On a single vessel, the captain often carries the same duties alone, alongside running the boat itself. The work is the same in both cases; what differs is how many vessels one person is answering for.
What does yacht management involve day to day?
- Documents: certificates, licences and surveys, each with an expiry date, renewed before they lapse.
- Maintenance: planned jobs by date or engine hours, plus the issues reported on board.
- Refits: yard periods planned, costed and recorded.
- Safety equipment: inspection and service dates for life rafts, extinguishers and similar gear.
- Crew: who is on board, what each person is tasked with, and what has been done.
- Charters: for charter yachts, each booking with its client, crew, amounts and payment status.
- Finance: expenses and revenue per vessel, reported against a budget.
What is yacht management software?
Yacht management software is a single system that holds those records for each vessel: documents with expiry dates, the maintenance plan, open issues, crew tasks, charters and expenses. It replaces the spreadsheets, folders and mailboxes that otherwise hold the same information in several places, so a question about a vessel has one answer.
What should yacht management software do?
- Keep one record per vessel, with documents, maintenance, issues, refits and safety equipment on it.
- Warn about expiries and overdue jobs before they become a problem.
- Let the crew and the office work from the same list.
- Show revenue, costs and margin per vessel and per charter.
- Work for one yacht and for a fleet without changing how it works.
How FleetView OS fits
FleetView OS is custom yacht management software. FleetView Marine, in Lisbon, builds each client’s system around how that operator works, from documents, maintenance, refits and safety equipment to cruise files, crew tasks, finances and the Fleet Copilot, an AI assistant that answers questions about the fleet and writes a daily brief. See parts often built into a FleetView OS, or how it works for yacht managers and for captains.
