P&I insurance
P&I (protection and indemnity) insurance covers a vessel owner's liability to third parties, such as injury to crew or guests, damage to other vessels or property, pollution and wreck removal. It sits alongside hull insurance, which covers damage to the yacht itself.
What is the difference between hull and P&I cover?
Hull and machinery insurance pays to repair or replace your own yacht. P&I pays claims that other people make against you. A yacht normally carries both, and marinas, charter brokers and flag states commonly ask for proof of each.
Why track it?
Both policies renew annually. Operating with lapsed cover can breach the charter agreement, the marina contract and the flag’s requirements at the same time, so the renewal dates belong in the vessel’s document register.
