ISM Code

The ISM Code (International Safety Management Code) is the international standard for the safe operation of ships, made mandatory by SOLAS Chapter IX. It applies to commercial vessels of 500 gross tonnage and above, including commercial yachts of that size.

What does the ISM Code require?

The operating company must run a documented safety management system: written procedures, defined responsibilities, a designated person ashore, reporting of accidents and non-conformities, maintenance records, and internal audits. The company holds a Document of Compliance and each vessel holds a Safety Management Certificate.

What about yachts under 500 GT?

They are outside the mandatory scope of the ISM Code, but several flag states require commercial yachts below 500 GT to keep a simplified safety management system, often called a mini-ISM. Many management companies apply the same discipline to private yachts because it is good practice.
