APA (advance provisioning allowance)
The APA is a sum the charterer pays before a yacht charter to cover running costs during the trip, such as fuel, food, drink and berthing. It is typically 25% to 35% of the charter fee, is accounted for by the captain, and any unspent balance is refunded.
How does the APA work?
The captain receives the APA before the charter and spends it on the guests’ behalf, keeping receipts. At the end of the charter the captain presents the accounts. If spending exceeded the APA the charterer pays the difference; if less was spent, the remainder is returned.
Why does it need careful records?
The APA is the charterer’s money, not the yacht’s income. It has to be kept separate from the vessel’s own operating costs, with every expense supported by a receipt.
