Running hours

Running hours, also called engine hours, are the total time an engine or generator has operated. Most marine service intervals are set in running hours rather than calendar time.

Why are service intervals set in running hours?

Wear on an engine depends on how long it has run, not on how many months have passed. A charter yacht may run 600 hours in a season while a private yacht runs 80, so a calendar-only schedule would over-service one and under-service the other. Manufacturers therefore state intervals in hours, usually with a calendar limit as well: for example every 250 hours or 12 months, whichever comes first.

How FleetView OS handles it

You log the hour-meter reading and FleetView OS works out which jobs have come due for that engine.
